Kariann's work is about the combination of close scrutiny of stains and residue caused by the passage of time with the abstraction of large architectural structures.
The monumental becomes small, the incidental is made large — like islands mapped atop the structures that are the very things that make them unimportant.
The combination of looking up and looking down — the very act of studying a space and mapping it — makes an intimate deconstruction of space that can become disorienting. This allows the viewer to wonder about the weight of mapping and how it changes the way a place is known.
